Man City host Man Utd on Wednesday evening at the Etihad Stadium with the hosts leading 3-1 on aggregate after the first leg of the Carabao Cup tie three weeks ago. Read the Man City v Man Utd match preview and predictions below.

Man City come into this match with a 3-1 lead after fielding a strong lineup in the first leg in the first week of the year. Goals from Silva, Mahrez and an own goal from United’s Pereira gives Pep Guardiola’s side a comfortable lead which is theirs to throw away.  City’s league form has only been overshadowed by that of Liverpool and have won 11 of their last 13 matches in all competitions and are unbeaten in their last 8. With three away goals from the first leg, the hosts will have to suffer their biggest defeat of the season in order to not progress into the next round.

Man Utd face yet another cup game having thrashed League Two side Tranmere Rovers 6-0 in the FA Cup on Sunday afternoon. Although that win will give Solskjær and his side a boost going into Wednesday’s game, they know that this will be a much tougher challenge. United’s form has been mixed this season and have only managed to find the net in one of their last three league games. They currently sit 5th in the Premier League which may be a bit flattering considering that they are 33 points off leaders Liverpool but only 11 points above the relegation zone. United have only averaged 1 goal per game on their travels in the league so far this season and they will need to find the net at least 3 times on Wednesday to progress. That, coupled with the fact that they’d need more goals should City score, paint a likely grim end result for the visitors.

Man City v Man Utd Prediction

Man Utd need goals on Wednesday night but it’s unlikely that City will sit back and protect their current lead. With the squad City has, even if Guardiola makes some changes, it’s hard to see them not finding the net at least once. If they do, we can’t see United having much of a chance in progressing to the next round. As United will be pushing for goals, we can see the hosts hitting them on the counter-attack at which they are so efficient at. Should City get the first goal, the visitors’ heads may drop and we could see City getting 2 or 3.
