Will Mo Salah Be Premier League Top Scorer?

We are now mid-way through the 2020/21 season and, after a period of relatively poor form, the Liverpool team is buzzing after the 3-1 defeat of Tottenham Hotspur last night.  Manager Jurgen Klopp was delighted with the win, coming on the back of recent lacklustre performances, and the three points now moves Liverpool up the Premier League table to fourth place on 37 points.  With Manchester City at the top on 41 points, Manchester United on 40 and Leicester City on 39 it remains a highly competitive race to win the Premier League title this May.  Manchester City are strong favourites this time round but Liverpool dearly want back-to-back League titles and remain in the running as second-favourites, chasing City hard.

In his fourth season at Anfield, Mo Salah has been instrumental in Liverpool’s success in the past few years with honours including winning the Champions League in 2018 and lifting the UEFA Super Cup and the Premier League trophy last year.  Salah was top scorer, with 32 goals,  in the Premier League in 2017/18 and then again the following year, sharing the honours with team-mate Sadio Mane and Arsenal’s Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang with 22 goals apiece.  Last season, Jamie Vardy of Leicester City took top spot with 23 goals with Salah finding the net on 19 occasions.  

The 28-year old Egyptian is favourite with UK bookies to be Premier League top scorer once again, with best odds of 21/10 from Irish bookmaker Paddy Power.  He has scored 13 goals to date this season, with Harry Kane and Son Heung-Min of Tottenham Hotspur both having scored 12 and Jamie Vardy on 11.  Kane and Vardy are joint second-favourites, with odds of 6/1 from bookie BetVictor but we expect the odds for Kane to lengthen as his manager Jose Mourinho has confirmed that Kane will be out of commission for weeks due to the injuries on both ankles sustained in the encounter with Liverpool yesterday. 

Every team member plays a role in a team’s success on the pitch but there is no doubt that the footballers that score the goals attract the most attention and admiration.   And Mo Salah delivers goals in spades.  Can he be the Premier League Top Scorer this season?  He’s already topping the leaderboard and we know he can deliver those goals.  But all 10 of his Liverpool team-mates need to be on the top of their game to enable him to do so.  Liverpool fans will be dearly hoping that the Reds are now finding their groove once more and that their hero, Mo Salah, will keep delivering.
