Who will win the African Cup of Nations?

The 32nd edition of the African Cup of Nations is expected to peak soon as the group stage is about to end. Have you chosen your favourite team yet? We are looking at the most promising squats that could lift the trophy home this year.

The African Cup of Nations is a competition for African football teams that takes place every two years. While the competition used to take place in January, it is happening for the first time in June/July this year. The reason for this change was that the international players do not have to pause playing for their clubs to take part in the African Cup of Nations.

This years’ host country is Egypt and the competition started on the 21st of June. The final game will take place in Cairo on July 19th. 24 teams participate in this year’s competition, making their way from the group stage to the round of 16, to the quarter-finals, the semi-finals and the final.

But who stands a chance of winning?

During the last years, there have been a few teams that stood out: Egypt, Cameroon, Ivory Coast, Ghana, Nigeria, and Senegal. But there is also a new team that the bookmakers did not have on their list of teams that could make it out of the group stage or even win the group. Let’s have a closer look at three teams that have the potential and are eager to win this year’s tournament.

Egypt

The favourite team to win the 32nd African Cup is the host nation, Egypt. In the history of the competition, they have won the trophy already seven times. In the last cup, that took place in 2017, Egypt lost to Cameroon in the finals. With the top player Mohammad Salah in their squad, the host country hopes that they will lift the trophy home after nine years without winning. If you take a look at the betting odds, Mohammad Salah (Egypt) is also the favourite player to win top goalscorer, followed by Jordan Ayeh (Ghana) and Sadio Mane (Senegal).

Madagascar

The biggest surprise of this year’s African Cup of Nations is Madagascar. The team managed to qualify for the competition for the first time this year and immediately won group B. After beating Nigeria 2-0, they qualified for the last 16 where they will face a second-ranked team next. In the meantime, Nigeria will need to recover from the shock of the last game to quickly keep up their status as one of the favourites.

Cameroon

After winning the African Cup of Nations in 2017, Cameroon is the second most successful team in this year’s competition. In total, they have won the trophy five times. This year’s tournament is also a test for the team’s new manager, Clarence Seedorf. The former Milan player started managing Cameroon in 2018 and therefore leading the team for the first time into the African Cup of Nations.

Cameroon would have been the host country of this year’s African Cup of Nations but lost the hosting rights in December 2018 because of delays in preparation for the tournament. The goal of the team is even clearer now: They will do everything to defend the title in Egypt.
