Who to bet on the 2021 Kentucky Derby?
April 1, 2021
This year’s Kentucky Derby is happening on May 1, 2021, at Churchill Downs, Louisville. This year will mark the 147th year of the race. It will consist of 36 races, 20 for the prep season and 16 for the championship season.
The most awaited horse racing competition is still a few months away, but racing fans and bettors are excited to know the biggest contenders this year. Last year’s winner was Authentic, who will win the hearts of the bettors this year?
Caddo River
Caddo River is a three-year-old colt trained by Brad Cox. He finished second in New York for his first two career starts. He then broke through with an impressive 9½-length victory at Churchill Downs last November. He covered a mile over a fast track at 1:35.22 to earn the Equibase rating of 104. He also earned a Beyer Speed Figure of 92.
Cox said that Caddo River is a very good colt. He’s tall, rangy, big, and leggy. Cox believes that Caddo River has what it takes to be better at racing, be serious, and has the speed to carry on the different races he’s going to enter.
Caddo’s best asset is his natural speed, making him the lead from start to finish in his two wins. He relaxes and settles well when he is at the front and he is at his best when he sets his pace when challenged.
Concert Tour
Concert Tour is a colt that has raced only once but dominated with a front-running victory last January at Santa Anita. He is well-bred for the Kentucky Derby. He has with him all star-connections, including his trainer, Bob Baffert.
Baffert is the winner of 6 Kentucky Derbys and the one who trained Authentic last year. Further, Joel Rosario was his jockey in his debut race and is one of the best jockeys in the country for more than 10 years. Concert Tour is also the son of Street Sense, the 2007 Kentucky Derby winner.
Essential Quality
Essential Quality is a three-year-old colt trained by Brad Cox. He finished his first season with a win at the Breeder’s Cup Juvenile in November at Keeneland. He also was the winner in the Grade 1 Breeders’ Futurity a few weeks earlier at Lexington. A few weeks before that, he broke his maiden at the Kentucky Derby at Churchill Downs.
Another strong point about Essential Quality is his trainer, Brad Cox. Cox has a talented group of horses for the coming 2021 derby, including Caddo River. Cox also plans on debuting Essential to the Southwest Stakes this February. His jockey, Luis Saez, has been with him for his last two starts. Further, he is the son of the three-time leading sire, Tapit.
Fire At Will
Fire At Will is a four-year-old colt trained by Michael Maker. He won the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf last November. He won his only race on dirt in the Saratoga main track, giving him a chance in the coming Kentucky Derby prep series. Fire has had four jockeys, with Ricardo Santana Jr. as his jockey for his Breeders’ Cup victory.
Fire at Will is the son of Declaration of War, a horse based in Europe, and has a successful stud career. Kitten’s Joy is his damsire, the top sire for the last 15 years. He is currently training in Florida in preparation for his coming races.
Life is Good
Life is Good is a four-year-old unbeatable colt trained by Bob Baffert. He made his first start at 9 ½-length victories going 6 ½ furlongs in November at Del Mar before he made his victory debut at the Grade 3 Sham Stakes held at Santa Anita. He earned a 101 Beyer and cemented his status as a top early Derby contender.
This top colt is trained by Bob Baffert who has 33 Derby starters. His jockey is the hall of famer Mike Smith, who won two Kentucky Derbys. He is the son of Into Mischief, who also sired Authentic. His damsire is Distorted Humor, who was also the father of the Kentucky Derby winner, Funny Cide.
