Trump Wins Snooker World Championship & Shrewd Punter Collects 1000/1 Odds
May 8, 2019
Judd Trump beat John Higgins 18-9 to claim his first World Championship title in one of the most breath-taking Crucible finals ever witnessed, sharing a record 11 century breaks.
Trump took total control at 12-5 after the first day in Sheffield and had a run of winning eight straight frames. Both failed to take their chances at maximum breaks as Trump went 16-9 up, a lead he did not relinquish in the final session.
Trump collects £500,000 in prize money, making him the first player in history to earn more than £1m in a single season. On his victory Trump said:
“It is an incredible achievement for me from where I was”
“I have worked so hard for this. For the people around me this is so special. It was an amazing final, the standard was so high from the very first ball.
“That is probably the best I have ever played in a major final.”
Trump’s victory has also seen one punter cash in on a 21 year old bet. Neil Morrice placed a £10 wager on Trump to win the sport’s top prize after spotting him at just eight years old at a snooker club near Bristol in 1998.
Morrice was given odds on 1000-1 by bookmaker Coral after seeing spotting Trump’s talent.
Speaking to the Bristol Post, Morrice said:
“I took my 12-year-old son Richard, who was a decent club player, on the circuit most weekends. On this one we ventured a bit further afield. So, we went to Keynsham snooker club, near Bristol, for a competition.
“This little lad came up to us and said if he fancied having a frame, he was about eight. He actually said he would give Richard a 20-point start, which made me chuckle.”
He literally annihilated him in both frames. Straight away I thought I need to do something about this.”
