Donald Trump Clear Favourite For President of the United States of America

The next presidential elections will take place on 3 November and current President, Donald Trump, is hot favourite to win a second term.  Bookmaker Unibet offers odds of 4/6 that the sole Republican candidate will be re-elected by the American people and certainly Mr Trump is on a roll just now.  He has three factors in his favour – firstly, the US economy is thriving, secondly, he is expected to be cleared on this, the final day of his impeachment process, and thirdly, the Democratic opposition is in disarray.

The recent Iowa caucuses have provided the President with ample ammunition to attack the Democrat party.  With about 200,000 voters, it is small fry compared with other states but has been seen as a useful bellwether. However, a technical problem with an app has meant that only a partial result has been obtained this week and this has damaged the Democrats as a party.  In addition, the lack of a front runner Democrat candidate means that Trump is able to divide the opposition and gain further leverage with voters.

At present, there remain five principal Democratic candidates in the running.  Bernie Sanders, 78-years-old, is a self professed socialist and he is front-runner at present with odds of 5/1 from Paddy Power.  He has edged ahead of the pack at the Iowa caucuses and causes consternation with other Democratic candidates through his ability to mobilise volunteers and take his message to voters who do not fall traditionally into the Democratic camp.

Billionaire businessman and former New York Mayor Mike Bloomberg’s star is rising and bookie William Hill offers odds of 8/1 that he will be the next President of the United States.  In contrast, support for lacklustre Joe Biden, the 77-year-old who was former President Barack Obama’s Vice President for 8 years, is now slipping and Ladbrokes offers odds of 10/1 for him to win office.

Pete Buttigieg, 38-year-old former mayor of South Bend, Indiana, is gaining considerable ground despite his lack of political experience on the national stage.  Ladbrokes offers odds of 16/1 that he will be the next President. Elizabeth Warren, the progressive Senator for Massachusetts, is not highly fancied to be elected although she still remains in the race at this stage, and Bet365 offers odds of 33/1 that she will become the first female President of the United States.

President Trump delivered the annual state-of-the-union address to the Democrat-controlled Congress yesterday.  On the same day, a Gallup poll revealed that Trump’s popularity is the highest it has ever been, with a 49% overall approval rating.  The poll also explored the public’s views on the economy and established that 63% of the voting public give Trump a thumbs-up for his handling of the economy.  This is 6 points ahead of the last poll in November 2019, and the highest economy approval rating for 20 years.

Despite being only the third President in the history of the United States to be impeached, Donald Trump continues to surprise with the growing level of support for his policies, in particular his emphasis on economic growth and jobs.  He remains the front-runner to be re-elected as President of the United States of America in November.
