Don’t worry if you’ve never placed a bet before or know nothing about horse racing as you’ll be joining millions of other people in the same situation. The Grand National is renowned for attracting bets from those who would generally not place bets on horse racing and with 40 horses running in the race, you have just a good a chance as anyone else at picking the winner. Despite many people believing picking a winner is pot luck in the Grand National, you can increase your chances by selecting a horse which meets the criteria of past winners. See below for some tips on picking a winner in the Grand National and to view some of the Grand National betting offers which are available.

Grand National Betting Offers

Many bookmakers will be running an increased number of betting offers in the run-up and on the day of the race. We advise you to sign up to as many bookmakers prior to the Grand National Festival starting as some of these offers will not be available on the day of the race.

Betfair is one bookmaker which will be running a number of offers on the 2020 Grand National and often provide the best odds. Click here to take a look at this years Grand National odds.

Betting offers which you can expect to be available on the 2020 include:

Extra Places: Get paid out on more places on your each way bets.

Refunds: There will be various types of refund offers available. Some bookmakers will be offering your stake back if your horse finishes 2nd/3rd/4th etc and some will offer a refund if your horse falls or unseats its rider.

Free Bets: There will also be a number of free bet offers available. An example would be ‘Bet £10 on the Grand National and get a £10 free bet’. Essentially, this gives you a chance to back a second horse using your free bet.

Best Odds Guaranteed: Many bookmakers will be offering Best Odds Guaranteed on the Grand National. With this offer, if the Starting Price (SP) of your horse is greater than the odds you took when you placed your bet, should it win, your bet will be settled at the higher odds.

Non-Runner No Bet: This offer applies to ante-post bets which are bets placed in advance of the day of the race. Should your horse not run for any reason such as through injury, illness or simply not be one of the final 40 horses to enter, you will receive your stake back.

How to pick a winner of the Grand National

As mentioned above, we can look at the previous winners of the Grand National and determine if there are any similarities between them. For example, if 9 of the last 10 winners were aged 9, it may be a sensible choice to back a horse in the 2020 Grand National of this age.

Below are some trends of previous Grand National winners which may help you pick a winner.

Age

The Grand National course isn’t an easy one and so experience is essential. 23 of the last 28 Grand National winners were aged 9 or older which is a 82.1% win rate for horses of this age. However, the last few years have seen exceptions with 3 of the last 4 winners being 8 years old.

In the last 30 years, only 2 horses have won the Grand National who were not aged between 8 and 11. Therefore, this age range seems to be a good indicator of a winner.

Jumps

The Grand National course consists of 30 fences to be jumped. Therefore, picking a horse which has a good record over fences and which doesn’t fall or unseat its rider often is essential.

The fences used on the Grand National course are spruce-covered and not used very much in other races. Therefore, not many horses have experience over them. Only 6 of the last 28 Grand National winners had run the race in previous years. However, 12 of the last 28 winners had won or had placed in a race with similar style fences.

As mentioned, picking a horse which is a solid jumper is essential given the number of and how challenging the fences are. Just 2 of the last 22 Grand National winners had unseated their rider or had fallen more than twice prior to winning the National.

Stamina

The Grand National is over a course distance of 4 miles and 1/4 furlong which makes it a testing run for many horses. Therefore, selecting a horse which has proven stamina is a good choice.

48 of the last 49 Grand National winners had won over 3 miles previously. That’s a 98% win rate based on this statistic.

Betting Odds

The betting odds of each horse should be a good indicator of how likely the horse is to win the Grand National. The lower the odds, the better chance they have of winning.

Only 5 of the last 28 Grand National winners had gone off at a price lower than 10/1 and the average odds of winners over the last 10 years is 24/1 which included a 66/1 win from Auroras Encore and a 4/1 win last year from Tiger Roll. Only 7 horses since 1950 have won the Grand National at odds of over 33/1.
