The Johnny Henderson Grand Annual Handicap Chase is run on the New Course at Cheltenham over a distance of approximately 2 miles and 1/2 furlong and features 14 fences.
The race was first run in 1834 and is the oldest race at the Cheltenham Festival. It was the final race of the Festival until 2019 when it switched places with the Martin Pipe Conditional Jockeys’ Hurdle and moved to be the second to last race. However, when the Liberthine Mares’ Chase replaced the Listed Novices’ Handicap Chase in 2021, the Johnny Henderson Grand Annual Handicap Chase was moved to day 2 of the festival with the same scheduled start time of 16:50.
Johnny Henderson, whose name was added to the race title in 2005, was a racehorse owner, banker and father of trainer Nicky Henderson. Henderson, along with other Jockey Club members raised almost a quarter of a million pounds in 1964 through the Racecourse Holdings Trust (now Jockey Club Racecourses) to purchase and secure the future of Cheltenham Racecourse.
