The St. James’s Place Foxhunter Challenge Cup takes place on the New Course at Cheltenham and is run over the same distance and circuit as the Gold Cup which is why it is sometimes referred to as the ‘Amateur Gold Cup’. There are twenty-two fences featured over a course distance of approximately 3 miles and 2 1/2 furlongs.

The race was introduced in 1904 and is open to horses aged 5 and over. In order to compete in the St. James’s Place Foxhunter Challenge Cup, horse must have either finished in 1st or 2nd place in two hunter chases, have won an open point-to-point race and finished 1st or 2nd in a hunter chase or have won two open point-to-point races.
